Russell Simmons And Al Sharpton Join PETA's Cause Against Micheal Vick

Holding signs that read, "NFL: Sack Vick" and "Tackle Cruelty," and posters showing a pit bull used for dogfighting, PETA members will converge on NFL headquarters in New York tomorrow (July 19) to demand that the league suspend Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick.
Vick was indicted by a federal grand jury on Tuesday on a conspiracy charge related to his alleged involvement with dogfighting, including the killing of dogs who "did not perform well" by hanging, slamming them to the ground, drowning, and electrocution. The activists will also hand out stickers:
Yesterday(July 18) , NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, the Atlanta Falcons, and Vick's corporate sponsors received a joint statement condemning dogfighting signed by PETA, The Rev. Al Sharpton, and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons.
"These dogs didn't stand a chance. Pit bulls were allegedly hanged, slammed to the ground, electrocuted, and shot. The NFL needs to send a strong message right now by sacking Vick," says PETA Vice President Bruce Friedrich. "Anyone who could force a dog to fight to the death should be kept away from all vulnerable forms of life, like children and animals. Dogfighting is a coward's blood sport that deserves harsh punishment, no matter how famous the alleged perpetrators are."
PETA will hold similar demonstrations in Atlanta as well as Richmond, where Vick is scheduled to appear in court next week.
The dogfighting fiasco has begun to hurt Vick's endorsment deals. Today (July 19) , The Nike Co. delayed the pending release of a sneaker bearing Vick's name.
The athletic shoe giant was set to allow the release of the sneaker by retail stores in August.
"Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick, and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent," the company said Thursday in a statement to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "We do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen; therefore, we have not terminated our relationship (but) will continue to monitor the situation closely and have no further comment at this time."
