Jonny Boy Speaks: Things Done Changed

So the numbers are in and it looks like G-Unit only pushed a little over a 100k. I gotta be honest. I’m shocked. I mean 50 has two diamond albums, that means 10 million sold and now a G-unit album is only pushing 100k. I really don’t get it. I mean don’t get me wrong it wasn’t the greatest album in the world but where is the Unit’s popularity going? Tech N9ne pushed 32k and he’s as independent as any artist can be.
How could a crew that once dominated the hip-hop world be at this point? Is it a lack of interest or is a product of the music not being good enough? I don’t know but I’m hearing all kind of crazy shit so I guess we’ll just have to see how this one plays out. The Byrd Gang album flopped and I was a little surprised as well. I figured some of Jim Jones’ ballllllllllinnn' popularity might have translated into sales for the crew.
Speaking of Jim Jones, I recently read a quote where Dame Dash said that Jones’ upcoming solo album might be a classic. I don’t know about that but I do know that Dame was around for a lot of classic material so we can’t take it with a grain of salt. Speaking of all this Dipset stuff I wonder where the hell Cam’ron is. Cam was a hot ticket in hip-hop for a long time, you people forget that. Where the hell is Juelz Santana ? He is one of like three new generation rappers that I can tolerate. He’s pretty clever with his shit.
I recently reported that Amil, Babs, Lady of Rage, and Lady Luck have recently teamed up to form a group called FEM. I’m very interested. Even the legend Ed Lover is involved. It should produce some good music. I mean, these are four talented female lyricists. I’m interested to see what comes of this and I can’t remember the last time I said that regarding a female rapper. Not to mention I always found Amil to be smokin’ hot so I’m looking forward to that as well.
Have you guys been on the Def Jam website lately? Damn the artist roster is looking lean. I’m not going into specifics but there are a lot of names missing, big ones too. It’s crazy how Def Jam was the premier hip-hop label and now it’s struggling. Don’t get me wrong, they got some talent. They got Young Jeezy and Rick Ross who I advise Def Jam to hold on to for dear life but where the hell is the rest of the talent? Nas, Jay-Z and Redman are still there which is good but I mean c’mon, how many years can we expect out of them? Jay has one foot out the door and Red doesn’t get the appreciation he deserves.
I am looking forward to Nas’ album though. Why he had to change the title is beyond me. Rappers throw the word around in their music left and right. Was it just a big deal because it was gonna be on the cover? Who knows, but it should be hot and word on the street is that Nas is going at 50. That’s definitely more comp than 50 has ever had. Nas ethered Jay, which makes him a dangerous man.
I know I’m talking heavy on 50 Cent this week but he’s all over the place. Before I Self Destruct is supposed to be coming out relatively soon and the way I see it 50 only has two options. He could either come out like a man possessed and re-create Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ or he could flop, fulfill his obligations to Interscope, and then go make 8 trillion more dollars. Either one is appealing. I guess it all depends on how much 50 loves the music. I personally think he’s way too competitive to take another L so I’m expecting something close to a masterpiece.
I’m also looking forward to Em’s new album as well as Detox if they would freakin’ come out already. I have a good feeling about Em, I think he’s coming out hard, like Marshall Mathers LP hard and all I have to say about Detox is that it better be good. It better be like both chronic albums on steroids. Anyway, we can all hope. I’m done with my ranting for now so I’m gonna go chill and you can catch me next week. I’m up to entry number four making this the trilogy. Ha! I came back for the trilogy like Andy Garcia. Anyway, I’ll check you out next week.
